Illiterate Gallery is excited to announce that in March 2011 it will be participating in the Month of Photography in Denver, Colorado with an exhibition titled The Big Picture. This show of grand scale contemporary photography, exposes the possibility of images as information instantly exchanged and blown up to large proportions. Images gathered from photographers around the world will be expanded as large Xerox prints displayed inside the gallery as well as posted in approved outdoor locations throughout the city of Denver and cities throughout the globe. Additionally, Illiterate has engaged in an exchange with a number of sister cities around the world where images will also be sent, blown up, and placed in public settings.

A portion of the work exhibited as part of The Big Picture will be selected from an open submission pool by a jury consisting of Illiterate's curatorial team along with organizers of the Month of Photography. From amongst the winners, submissions will be selected for mounting in Illiterate Gallery and public spaces in Denver and cities world wide. The fee to submit is $20 for up to five images, with a fee of $5 for each additional image. Those selected to participate may supply their own editioned and signed prints, or can opt to have Illiterate create prints for them. Prints will all be available for purchase at Illiterate Gallery and on Illiterate's online store, with all sales split 50/50 between the artist and the gallery. Those selected to participate may also supply original framed photograph(s) to be exhibited in Illiterate Gallery's project space.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

A Xerox printer has the capacity to print up to 36in x 48in (91.4 cm x 121.9cm). Submitters are free to submit smaller images. Larger images may be submitted with the knowledge that if selected they will be printed in sections.

This year's show will open First Friday, March 4th and close March 30th, 2011 at Tenn Street Coffee & Books. We are a member of the Tennyson Art District which hosts First Friday events year round.

Show: 2nd Annual Travelers on Tenn, March 4th - March 30th, 2011, Tenn Street Coffee & Books, Denver, CO.
Drop Off Date: Wed, March 2nd, between 5-6 PM at Tenn Street Coffee & Books, 4418 Tennyson Street, Denver, CO.
Artist Reception: First Friday, March 4th, 6-9 PM, Artist are Requested to Attend!!!
Unsold Work Pick Up Date: Wed, March 30th, between 5-6 PM.

Show Details:

1. Theme of this show is Travel. We are open to considering your interpretations of the idea of travel..exotic, vacation, stateside or created journeys...
2. The Call for Entry is open to all photographers , working with digital or traditional photography or a combination of both.
3. Each artist is requested to submit 3-6 images (jpegs please) for consideration. Please include titles, framed sizes and prices. Price points under $400 sell best! (Please note, work that was exhibited in the 1st Travelers' show will not be accepted in this show. Looking for NEW work!)
4. Each artist can have up to 3 pieces exhibited in the show.
5. Entry Fees Due Upon Acceptance: 1 piece, $20 - 2 pieces, $30- 3 pieces, $40
6. Sales Commission split is 60% artist, 40% Tenn Street Coffee. Tenn Street handles all sales during the show.
7. Tenn Street markets all First Friday shows thru several internet art sites along with it's web site and Facebook invites. And we distribute posters of the event in the neighborhood. Plus if you have a web site we link you to ours.

If you are interested in applying please email your images or web site to sharon@sharonmeriash.com to be considered. We do our best to review images within 48 hours of receipt. If you have a web site you want to submit please identify the images on your site you want considered.

Due to the popularity of our shows we do work on a "First Come, First Serve" basis and spaces are limited. So the sooner you submit the better!
Once your work is accepted, an Artist Agreement will be emailed to you and your entry fee will be due within 7 days to secure your spot.

Accepted entries will be displayed throughout the following participating galleries: Artwork Network, Black Book, Carla Wright Gallery, Illiterate Gallery, Niza Knoll Gallery, Open Press Gallery, Sellars Project Space, Space Gallery, Vertigo Art Space, and Z Art Dept. 

To Enter: Email two photos in Jpeg format to openpressltd@ecentral.com. Entries should be 72 dpi, not to exceed 1 MB. Label file names with artist last name and number (example: smith_1.jpg, smith_2.jpg). Include artist name, title, dimensions, and medium in email body. Please include your name and “The Print Event” as the subject of your email. For other formats please call: (303)778-1116. Accepted artists are responsible for delivery and pick-up of their artwork. Galleries will retain a 50% commission on all sales. We intend the show to be as inclusive as possible.

Criteria for selection: Digital or Darkroom, limited editions of photo generated images. No mass reproductions.

Entry fee: $20 (non-refundable). Accepted artists can exhibit  2 framed pieces and up to three shrink wrapped or similarly protected pieces also as an option five scratch and dent, test proofs, artist proofs on lesser paper prints all priced under $50.Any photos with a retail price above $500 will pay an additional fee of $10. The Weekend of Prints, Inc is now accepting entries for the first annual multi-gallery photo exhibition in Denver ’s well known Santa Fe, Golden Triangle and Broadway art districts. The event will celebrate the innovation, tradition and beauty of prints generated by a photographic process. This exhibition will coincide with the beginning of the Month of Photography, Denver (MOP), which is a celebration of fine art photography through over 80 collaborative public events throughout Denver and the region for the month of March 2011.

Robert Benjamin: Notes from a Quiet Life

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) presents the first-ever solo museum exhibition for photographer Robert Benjamin. Robert Benjamin: Notes from a Quiet Life shares a vision of beauty and patience cultivated through a lifetime devotion to photography.  This is a rare opportunity to view works by a ‘photographer’s photographer’ who has traded prints with America’s leading artists, but who has refused museum and gallery exhibitions until now. The exhibition of 40 color prints and Polaroids made between 1984 and 2003 will be on view November 13, 2010 through May 29, 2011, in the Delisa and Anthony Mayer Photography Gallery on level seven of the North Building.

“Benjamin has pursued his work with quiet tenacity and grace for nearly 40 years,” said Eric Paddock, DAM’s curator of photography. “The extraordinary colors and chromatic relationships in Benjamin’s photographs, and the sheer magical presence of the people and things in his photos, remind me of the beauty any of us can find in everyday life if we aren’t too caught up in other things to stop and really look.”

Born in Chicago, Benjamin, 63, traveled around the world before landing in New York City where he bought his first camera in 1972. At that time there were only two photography galleries in New York and comparatively few books available on the art form. Benjamin started taking pictures of the subject he found most interesting and accessible—his own life. Over the years he’s earned a living in retail sales, but always kept his practice and passion of photography alive. He now resides in Fort Collins, Colo., with his family.

Visitors will enjoy thoughtful, striking images that give a glimpse into Benjamin’s life. Taking down the barriers between photographer and viewer, he captures the everyday moments of his family and hopes to inspire others with these common experiences. “I’m just a dad with a camera,” Benjamin said. “I started photography for the same reason any artist does, but I didn’t have the same influences; I didn’t have to please anyone but myself.” Benjamin believes the beauty of this subject matter is no longer tolerable in art. Lots of photographers are looking to capture scandal or violence, he notes. “What I show—love and beauty together—it’s downright radical.”

Paddock believes an important part of his job is to highlight the work of exceptional photographers who live and work in Colorado. “This exhibition is a way to walk the walk and not just talk the talk,” Paddock said. “We want to bring Benjamin’s work into the light of day so more people can see and learn from what he sees and how he sees it.”

The photography department was founded through the vision and energy of Evan Anderman, John Grant, Robert G. Lewis, Anthony R. Mayer and director emeritus Lewis Sharp. Major funding for the gallery is provided by Delisa and Anthony R. Mayer. Additional support is graciously provided by Mrs. Frederick R. Mayer, Evan and Elizabeth Anderman, Julie and Robert G. Lewis, Cathey and Richard Finlon, Frederick M. Mayer, Devon Dikeou and Fernando Troya, Polly and Mark Addison, Nancy Tieken, the citizens who support the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District and the members of the Annual Fund Leadership Campaign. The Denver Art Museum is located on 13th Avenue between Broadway and Bannock Streets in downtown Denver. Open Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday noon-5 p.m.; closed Mondays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. General admission is free on the first Saturday of each month. Additional ticket may be required for special exhibitions, including King Tut.
